Tubbrid Castle, County Kilkenny in March 1986.
Amongst the best tower houses that we visited. The first comment in my note book is: “restorable” and the good news is that it has been beautifully restored.
The notebook then goes on to observe: barrel vault over ground first floors. Attic over 2nd floor. Straight stairs. Murder hole, machiolation. Wall walks, parapet and roof gone. Interesting windows and window seats on 1st and 2nd floors. Garderobes. Slop shutes on first and second floors. Bolt holder on second floor to roof stairs. Adjoining farmyard in separate ownership. Some small ruined outbuildings. Well with electric pump in use outside.
