Portlick Castle, County Westmeath, in June 1986.
A large tower house with a Georgian house attached which was extended and castellated in Victorian times, set in the once Land Commissioned, Portlick Amenity Area.
Elongated machiocolis over original entrance. Vault over ground floor. Straight mural stairs in west wall. Garderobes on west wall. Mural passages in west and east walls. Floors and roof – not original (roof in reasonable order). Cruciform loops. Later windows. Spiral stairs on upper floors to roof. Spiral changes direction in the last flight. Wall walk and later chimneys. Beautiful views across Lough Ree. Scary amount of nesting jackdaws with lots of young. Could not get up to the top floor because of a five foot high jackdaws’ nest. Very damp.
