Rathgormuck Castle, County Waterford, in June 1986.
Originally a Power stronghold. According to the then owners it was occupied in 1635. The south wall fell in or was demolished and this was the section of the tower house which contained the stairs.
The site of an early castle was believed to have been about 50 yards to the east in the same field.
Rathgormuck Castle was the centre of a medieval settlement, with a church, school and many cabins.
The south wall was thought to have been remodelled with a fine entrance, which was later reduced and eventually blocked up. The new stairs were wooden.
When the south wall fell it brought down part of the vault over the first floor.
It was believed to have been abandoned in the early 1800s.
Stone head high on a wall, there may have been two of them originally.
