Rathmore Castle, County Offaly, in August 1987.
A large site with a circular tower house, that has one section (east wall) missing. Three stories over ground floor. Garderobe Shute on west wall.
The garderobe was reached by a ladder, left on site, by some kind person. It had two shot holes.
Rectangular loop on first floor (my notes said it had a shutter – doubtful?! – I must have meant that there was evidence that the loop once had a shutter). Built on a rocky outcrop, the tower had a cottage just below it to the east.
Inside the south east wall, there was an arched aumbry on the ground floor. Evidence of original internal wall plaster, which covered some of the corbels.
Must have had bawn walls, but it was hard to decipher the site, without properly surveying it.
Lots of ruined stone walls.
