Rockfleet or Carrigahowley Castle, in County Mayo, April 1987.
An Irish National Monument associated with Grace O’Malley/Grainne ni Mhaille, the legendary pirate queen.
She is believed to have retired to this castle “with all her own followers and 1,000 head of cows and mares”. The tower house is four storey, with an unusual door on the 4th floor, almost over the main entrance. There is a little chamber at first floor level with no apparent access. The tower has two diagonally opposing bartizans.
