Ballaghmore Castle, County Laois, in June 1987.
The top half of the tower did not appear to be original. The later wooden floors were extremely unsafe. Access to the ground floor by door in east wall. Main entrance to the north with murder hole over. Straight mural stairs. Looks as though a vault may have collapsed, at second floor level. Bad structural cracks. Interesting remains of 3 turrets close to the tower at SE, SW and NW corners. SW one had shot hole, Cornell Rd roof and 2 good cruciform loops. Did not see the sheela na gig that was supposed to be on a quoin stone.
