Clonmantagh Castle, County Kilkenny, on a late evening in March 1986.
These photographs show the extent of what may have once been bawn walls. The SW corner wall was curved and there appeared to have been at least one angle turret on the wall. There was a well inside the bawn. .
The tower house was roofed at the time and it is good to report that it has has subsequently had more work done to it.
There is evidence that an earlier house or hall with a steep pitched roof once adjoined the tower.
A sheela na gig lying on her side graces one of the corners of the castle. .
A Butler / Mountgarret Castle it is part of an interesting archaeological complex with an early church sited nearby.
