Rathbarry Castle, County Cork visited in August 1986, on the Castlefreke demesne. At that time I noted that some of the photos were taken from the site of the bastion, on the west side of the remains of a motte.
The later Castlefreke was also in ruins at the time.
Very little remained of the tower house which had been partially incorporated into a stable yard and there were traces of a bawn wall.
The site had been continuously been occupied for the best part of 1000 years.
The only remains of the tower, that was apparent, was a vaulted chamber on the west side of the yard, which had been converted for farm use.
In 1986 there were plans for the yard to become a craft centre under the auspices of the state body ANCO.
